Description

The DL&W Morris & Essex Division is a prototype layout (with a modest amount of freelancing) that models the Lackawanna’s operations in Western New Jersey. There are several different lines and a large classification yard included.

An interesting feature is that the two parallel mainlines of the DL&W from Port Morris, NJ to Slateford, PA are both modeled. The NJ Cutoff (commonly known as the Lackawanna Cutoff) is 11 miles shorter than the original Old Road line and much flatter with grades overcome by massive earthworks and high bridges; It was considered to be the super railroad of its day. You will likely cross it on your way while traveling to a layout during ProRail and it is hard to miss. The Old Road has far more local, branch, and connecting traffic than the NJ Cutoff and has heavier grades. Few model railroads have such a combination and it is one of the signature features of this territory.

While the layout is still under construction, much of the mainline track has been laid with about half of it wired up. Eventually, there will be a functioning CTC system on the Cutoff with automatic block signals on the Old Road and Sussex Branch. Until then, an improvised “manual” CTC system will be in use on the Cutoff while the other lines will be controlled by TT&TO.

Traffic is generally destined to/from the NY metropolitan area, but there is a connection for New England traffic via the Lehigh & Hudson River RR at Andover.

In addition to the yard jobs in the substantial Port Morris Yard, there will be through and local freight service, mainline passenger service, and commuter trains to keep everyone happily busy.
